Role Overview

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides one-on-one support to individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities in home and community settings. Their primary goal is to promote emotional, physical, and personal well-being, helping individuals achieve their goals outlined in their Individual Support Plan (ISP). They assist with daily living activities, life skills development, and community engagement while ensuring health and safety. Documentation of services and communication with interdisciplinary teams are essential. The DSP supports individuals in increasing independence, respecting their preferences, and maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.

Qualifications & Skills

High school diploma or equivalent; valid driver’s license, vehicle insurance, and registration; ability to work flexible hours; clear background checks; and physical ability to perform job duties including lifting and mobility tasks. Key skills include effective communication, problem-solving, organization, calmness under stress, and attention to detail. The role requires sensitivity to individual rights and cultural diversity.
